Writing coaching

With my help you can write a novel you are proud of

Ready to start your writing coaching adventure?

Writing coaching will help you:

  • work through story or character issues
  • hone your craft
  • stay focused and on track
  • write a book you are proud of.

Here are four ways you can get started on your coaching adventure.

Dip your toe workshop

One-hour workshop of the first 15K words of your draft. We’ll discuss what’s working, what needs developing or tightening and where the story is going.

You will leave the session with confidence and direction for your next round of writing and editing.

The workshop is recorded so you can work back through it at your own pace.

This can be a stand-alone experience or the beginning of our work together.

 Cost: $450

Get going workshop intensive

This three-month intensive of fortnightly workshops is for new writers who are still finding their way into their book and their craft. It will help you expand your writing skills and get your novel on track.

You will finish the program with a swag of new writing insights and ideas, and a refreshed approach to your novel.

How does it work?

The get going coaching intensive follows on from a dip your toe appraisal of the first 15K words of your manuscript. We’ll explore the building blocks of a novel and how to apply them to your book. We’ll also look at elements of craft that will help bring your characters to life and draw your reader in emotionally.

Alongside this we’ll work towards developing a chapter outline, which will give you a framework for working on your next draft.

Includes:

  • six one-hour workshops (recorded)
  • a copy edit of your most polished chapter, up to 3000 words
  • 30-minute follow-up session

Cost: $1450

Keep going workshop program

This six-month program of monthly workshops will keep you inspired and on track. The program suits writers who are underway with their first draft and graduates of the get going intensive.

You will leave each session feeling encouraged and inspired to keep going, with a clear idea of what’s working, what needs work and what to do next to get one step closer to finishing your novel.

How does it work?

I read your submitted chapters in advance, we work through them together on screen, then discuss the next steps. The session is recorded so you can go back over it as often as you like.

There are two options to choose from:

Keep going chunky – workshopping up to 72,000 words over six months.

Includes:

  • six one-hour workshops of up to 12,000 words (recorded)
  • notations on your manuscript sent after each workshop
  • 30-minute follow-up session

Cost: $2400

Keep going lightworkshopping up to 30,000 words over six months.

Includes:

  • six 45-minute workshops of up to 5000 words (recorded)
  • notations on your manuscript sent after each workshop
  • 30-minute follow-up session

Cost: $1450

NB If needed we can spread the program over seven months to allow for a holiday month or time off for other reasons.

• Go at your own pace workshop packs

Your choice of one, three or six one-hour workshops reviewing up to 15K words per session.

You will leave each session feeling encouraged and inspired, with a clear idea of what’s working, what needs work and what to do next.

Lu Sexton

Hello, I’m Lu Sexton. Helping writers get their novel where they want it is my favourite thing to do.

I developed my coaching method through years of working as an editor with new writers. I started offering manuscript appraisals in a workshop setting (rather than as a written report), which the writers really loved, and so did I. So it grew from there.

If you are curious about how I could help you, give me a call or drop me a line.

Lu has been a pleasure to work with. Her manuscript assessment, one-on-one writing workshops and copy edits have been invaluable in the development of my first novel. Lu has a lot of knowledge and attention to detail which, along with her enthusiasm, really helped me take my manuscript to the next level.

I’d strongly recommend Lu to any writers – she can really help you develop a solid finished product.

Nichola Scurry

Author of 'With the Music'

Lu has been incredible, her ability to help my voice and give me the guidance and confidence to tell my story has been more than I asked of her. I highly recommend contacting her, no matter what stage you’re at, and you won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait until we can work together again…after I implement some her insight and rework a few more chapters. Love ya style Lu 😁
